Hemingway's house in Key West

Ernest Hemingway House
907 Whitehead Street
Key West, FL 33040

Built in 1851 as a Spanish Colonial Style Estate. in 1931, Pauline's uncle purchased this home for her and her new husband for $8,000 cash - as a wedding gift! Hemingway and his wife Pauline (nicknamed Pfife) lived here from 1931-1939. The home was sold to the founder of the museum after Hemingway's death in 1961 by his last wife. Fun fact, in Hemingway & Gellhorn, a film I highly recommend if you are a Hem fan like myself, sets were built for both of his houses featured in the film, however one exterior shot was filmed at an old boy's school in Marin County, north of SF (thanks to my new friend and location scout Alex Pearcy!). Hemingway moved from Paris to Key West with his second wife Pfife in 1928 (with a temporary stop in Cuba), then moved to Cuba for good in 1940 with his third wife, Martha Gellhorn.

In 1968, the house was named a U.S. National Historic Landmark.
