After the California Gold rush of 1849, immigrants from Genoa, Italy moved here for the rich soil in Hayes Valley to farm some of the best produce around. 1856 Michael Hayes, who was on the street naming committee, allegedly named Hayes Street after his brother Thomas who a huge landowner at the time. Interesting enough, the primary streets were named after influential locals and the smaller streets after botanical flowers/terms.
