Washington Mews, a little part of Italy in NYC

Washington Mews, New York, NY 10003

Very close to Washington Square Park between 5th avenue and University Place lays a small gated side street called Washington Mews. Back in the 18th Century a large Farm was owned by Captain Robert Richard Randall, upon his death the area became known as Sailor's Snug Harbor. Later having two-story stables built in this area along Washington Square and the south side of Eighth Street becoming known as Washington Mews. These were private stables used for the well-known New Yorkers of their day. In 1881, NYC demanded gates be built on both ends of the road in order to keep its privacy. The fun part, in 1916 these stable were renovated into artists studios, including one particular woman that resided there, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. I'm sure you heard of her or some of her family members... haha. Bringing us now to 1950 where NYU leased most of the property to house their facility, this is true still to date. When on this street you feel as though you left NYC and you are in some party of Italy.. very interesting..
