Oldest Hotel in Capri - La Palma

Hotel La Palma
Via Vittorio Emanuele 39
80073 Capri

The actual hotel (originally under the name of the owner - Giuseppe Pagano) has been around since 1822 - making this the oldest hotel in Capri! It started out by Pagano inviting in travelers to his villa then hosting them solely to meet new people and chat. Since most of his guests were creative types via painters, writers and musicians they would show their appreciation by painting the walls ( shown below) or writing poems.

This hotel is also tied to one of the most beautiful spots and one of my favorites in the world - the Blue Grotto. In 1826, the German poet August Kopish was staying at this hotel and while exploring he found the cave that is famous today and named it Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto). Legend said the cave was "induced to sins" - which put the fear in anyone from entering, that is until the brave Kopish did at his own risk. This discovery alone changed Capri as everyone wanted to come and see the beautiful blue color that mirrored off of the limestone ocean floor!

The Blue Grotto, for a few euros more you can jump out of the boat and swim!
